André M. Bluteau (b. Canadian 1986) is a slowly building catalogue of songs.
Born in Canada’s capital city, without having seen much else of the country, Bluteau writes songs that are heavily concerned with notions of home.
“I grew up in a sheltered family there was a forceful presence of fear that came from my parents, which led to a desire to control the actions of the family in order to protect us from what may be.”
Crooked Smiles (2010) is Bluteau’s first release. It is a naïve collection of nine songs recorded between the winter and spring of 2009 at Little Bullhorn Prods with the kind ears and heart of Dave Draves. Additional guests on the album included Mike Feuerstack (Snailhouse), Olivier Fairfield (Ferriswheel). The album received warm reviews, most notably:
“Andre Bluteau can trade on his voice alone. It’s craggy, untutored, and so distinctive that it makes the record. The lush instrumentation is a bonus.”
- Ottawa Citizen
“…Filled with heartbreak and wise ruminations of life; one finds themselves pleasantly surprised by calm empathy felt for the fellow, as much as his captivating writing and his voice, imbued with humility. ”
- Voir
Currently Bluteau is working away at his upcoming release. Sons (Fall 2012)
“I was raised by good people who happened to be broken. I love you”
